I will get closer to God through listening

Proverbs 4:20-21 – Dear friend, listen well to my words; tune your ears to my voice. Keep my message in plain view at all times. Concentrate! Learn it by heart! Those who discover these words live, really live; body and soul, they’re bursting with health.

We can be really good at talking. Especially when it comes to talking to God about what we need or want. What we aren’t the greatest at is listening to God.

Like any healthy relationship, talking and listening go hand in hand. And it isn’t any different in our relationship with God. Prayer was always designed to have a listening element to it, but not just from God, us too!

Think about it, the Bible says when we draw near to God, He draws near to us. When we pray to God, that is us drawing near to Him. In turn, God draws near to us by responding. Problem is, we cut God off before He can say anything, because once we’re done talking, we end the prayer!

Listening is vital to knowing God more intimately (Psalms 46:10); listening helps us become personally accustomed to His voice (John 10:27); listening puts us on the right track in life (Proverbs 3:6); listening is what builds up our faith (Romans 10:17); and like the key verse says, listening has its health benefits!

Praying to God was never meant to be a one-way street. Take the time to listen to God in your prayers today and see your walk change in ways you could never imagine!

Prayer: Lord, knowing the sound of Your voice is something I long for. Please forgive me for not taking the time to listen to You speak in my quiet time with You. Please help me develop the discipline to be still and listen for Your voice. I pray that I will become attuned to Your voice and that Your voice will override any other voice in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
